Book Blogger Hop: Nov. 3-9

Book Blogger Hop

This week’s question: When reading a book, do you use a bookmark to mark your place in a book, or do you just fold over the top corner of the page?

23231290_10100115096803889_5978470626375544124_nI love my bookmarks! I may or may not have an addiction. I have magnetic bookmarks as well as straight bookmarks and I love choosing a different bookmark for every book I read. Sometimes I pick depending on the book or the season or my mood. They’re just so fun! I used to be a page corner-er so I’m not 100% morally opposed if I must but usually I’ll find something to use as a bookmark. Post-it note….receipt….some other scrap paper….whatever is handy, you get the idea.

So how about you – what do you use? What is your method of saving the page? Bookmark? Dog-eared page (that’s what my mom always called it)?

Tag Tuesday: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

3581b9d3642ab0640f56ac757077b052Happy Halloween, everyone! I hope you all have had a fun month of reading and celebrating in your own ways! I have read a few spooky books, baked some fun things, watched a couple good movies, and overall had a pretty good month!  Like usual, of course it all went fast and I can NOT believe tomorrow is the first day of November. Almost time to start prepping for Christmas. Really?! Wow. All of that being said, I’m trying to savor fall for at least another couple of weeks. I absolutely love Christmas, but fall never seems to last long enough.

All right. So now for the reason we are all here. The tag of the week: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I found this one on the blog of Danielle at Welshie Books and Thoughts. She Googled for a Halloween tag and found this one so…mad props girl! Here we go!

1. Carving pumpkins- What book would you want to carve up and light on fire?

194m9p0pttis2jpgOh my gosh, The Vampire Diaries. Awful! Let me say this though: For those who read the books first, they usually think the show is awful. Well, I’m in the party of those who watched the show first and think the books are cheesy as hell. So my recommendation…pick one or the other and stick to it!

2. Trick or Treat- What character is a trick, what character is a treat?

My favorite tricky characters have always been the Weasley twins! Talk about guys who work toward their goals and have a blast doing it!! They are funny, they are good people, they are great to their family, did I mention that they are hilarious?? I just love them!! Best tricks ever. As for treats, I’ll take my treat in the form of Jean-Claude from the Anita Blake novels by Laurell K. Hamilton. I feel like he’s always licking his lips and being seductive and I just love him. I love a good paranormal romance and this series is my perfect poison to get me addicted and keep me reading!!

3. Candy Corn- What book is always sweet?

Hmm, always sweet? The Hunger Games. I absolutely love The Hunger Games. At all times, and in all places, I love HG. Love the story, the characters, the message, all of it. No, the violence is certainly not sweet and the idea of rebellion and the twisted plot of people against government is not sweet, but again, the idea that ordinary people can make a difference and remake their own reality is such a powerful one.

4. Ghosts- What character would you love to visit you as a ghost?

This one is tough because there are many!! I think I would definitely like to visit Dumbledore! My favorite thing about old Dumbley is his wit and his knowledge. I would want to learn so much about the wizarding world, but yet I would also want to know about him, and yet I would just want to hear tales of his adventures and about plain old nonsense!! I think he just has stories to tell and things to say!

5. Dressing up in costume- What character would you want to be for a day?

outlander-outfits-1I would love to wear any of the big gowns from when Claire was in France on Outlander! Even her English dresses are pretty too but in France, WOW. Emma Watson had a couple dresses I’d love to wear as well from Beauty and the Beast but overall, I’d way rather be Claire for the day and spend time with Jamie. YES. PLEASE. (!!!!)

6. Wizards and Witches- What is your favourite Harry Potter moment?

Oh my gosh, really? How can anyone pick a favorite HP moment?! McGonagall stepping up her game and defending Hogwarts? Harry defeating Voldemort?

7. Blood and Gore- What book was so creepy that you had to take a break from it for a while?

The Shining and Doctor Sleep. Pretty much any scary/creepy/gory books I can’t read before sleep and books like these I just have to read really slowly so I don’t ingest them too quickly and then have nightmares!! I love reading them but my imagination goes wild!

Book Blogger Hop: Halloween Edition!

This weeks question: Candy corn, a chocolate bar, or popcorn. Which of these are your favorite to eat while reading?

My answer: Popcorn!! I love salty, buttery popcorn! Although usually I pair it with something sweet like M&Ms or Raisinets. THAT is my perfect snack!

Tag Tuesday: Falling for Fall

Hi everyone! Today is the perfect fall day and how could I possibly do any other tag than the “Falling for Fall” tag from my fellow GREAT Blogger Jackie at The Bookworm Cafe. So here we go!

fallingforfall

  1. What is your favorite Fall scent? Nothing beats Mother Nature’s fresh morning dew on fallen leaves. Or the smell of an apple barn in the fall! Oh, love it! But I guess when it comes to commercial scents, Bath & Body Works’ Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin and/or Apple Pumpkin. Both are SO GOOD!! Yum!
  2. Do you prefer apple stuff or pumpkin stuff? Apples in September and Pumpkins in October. But really everything all the time, lol!
  3. What is one thing that you look forward to every single Fall? Going to apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Reading mysteries and suspense books. Decorating. Wait, the question only called for one thing didn’t it? Whoops! ;P
  4. How do you like to spend the more chilly/cloudy days in the Fall? Cuddled up with a book and a cup of tea or cider.
  5. Which do you prefer: Halloween or Thanksgiving? All of the above!
  6. What is one thing you do to embrace the Fall season? ALL THE THINGS!! lol. Decorate my house and office desk, light candles, read seasonal books.
  7. What photos would you like to get this Fall season? I just took fall-themed engagement photos!
  8. Favorite childhood memory from this season? Carving pumpkins with my mom and brother.
  9. What is your favorite trend (fashion/makeup/etc) so far this season? Oooh, this is probably the area that I follow the least. I do know I like the slouchy sweaters/cardigans though.
  10. Describe what the Fall weather really looks like where you live. I’m in the midwest so the leaves are changing and falling and pumpkins are growing and we have apples and gourds and all the good stuff!

*Mystery Blogger Award*

Its #SundayFunday and I hope it is treating you all well! I have a “to do” list about a mile long because I start a new job tomorrow! My world is about to be flipped upside down because I am going from basically unemployed to full-time in a snap! YIKES!!! Yes, I am terrified but at the same time I am so excited. This will be my first full-time job and I feel so blessed to have found something in my field and close to my house.

Ok, that’s enough of the personal mumbo jumbo, that’s not why you’re all here. On to the bookish! I was just nominated for the ominous-sounding but truly fun *Mystery Blogger Award* by Maggie @ The Caramel Files. Here’s the scoop:

mystery-blogger-award

The Rules:

  • Put the award logo on your blog
  • List the rules
  • Thank whoever nominated you and include a link to their blog
  • Mention the creator of the award and provide a link to their blog as well
  • Tell your readers three things about yourself
  • Nominate 10-20 people
  • Notify your nominees
  • Ask your nominees any five questions of your choice, specifying one weird/funny question
  • Share a link to your best post(s)

About me:

  • Since I mentioned “my field” and what-not, I’ll elaborate a little and then get back to books. My first degree is a Bachelor’s in Music, and I have been teaching voice and piano lessons part-time for the part 6 years since I graduated. I recently went back to school and got another degree (Associate’s) in Health Information so I now can work full time in a hospital with medical records and still teach part time on the side.
  • I am a trained classical singer, meaning that I sing opera. Of course, I can also sing (or teach) pretty much any genre out there, but I do love the challenge, beauty, and complexity of opera.
  • While I love wearing beautiful gowns and putting on stage make-up to sing, I also love camping, canoeing, and being outside in general. I spent every summer growing up at a camp and then I worked there for many years and its my home away from home. My music friends in college never understood this about me.

My Favorite Post So Far: The Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag …It got a great reaction from readers and it was one of the most fun tags I have done! Plus there were just so many great books I/we got to talk about in general so that’s always awesome.

Maggie’s Questions:

  1. Is there a book or story you feel parallels your life? If yes, tell us all about it! This is perfect timing for this question because I just finished the best book for this: 257521542 So you know how I mentioned earlier that I enjoy that weird mix of fancy opera and down-and-dirty outdoors? Yep, this book has it. Now I’m not saying that you have to be into both of those things to enjoy this book. Its not a book for opera-lovers. It is contemporary-YA and it is a powerful read, it also just happens to have those other two elements in it and I love it for that all the more, and that is what parallels my life. A lot of the other details in the story do not (in fact, pretty much none of the story line has anything to do with my life, lol).
  2. What title would you choose for your autobiography and why? Hmm. Life Songs – Pretty open-ended. I’m not very creative when it comes to writing, which is why I read books and not write them.
  3. What are the last three books you chose to DNF?
  4. What was your favorite book as a child and why? I don’t think I had any one favorite book as a child. My grandmother ran a “Books on Parade” branch out of her basement so I had access to kids books all the time and we were constantly reading everything that circulated. I remember reading Goldilocks, Clifford, Goodnight Moon, later as I grew up Anne of Green Gables and Harry Potter.
  5. Is there a genre you absolutely refuse to read? If yes, why? I don’t read Harlequin Romances or high fantasy. To me the romances are just too cheesy and get boring and high fantasies are just too ‘out there’ for me to wrap my head around. Too many places and names for me to remember and pronounce and wrap my head around and my brain gets overloaded.

Questions for my Nominees:

  1. How many books have you read so far this year? What is your goal for the rest of the year?
  2. If you could spend a day with any bookish character, who would it be and why?
  3. Piggybacking off of Q2, what would you want to do in your day with chosen bookish character (where would you go, what would you see…could be real or a setting in their book, etc.)?
  4. If you could do one as a full time job, which would you choose: reading books or writing books?
  5. What is your most and least favorite book you have read this year?

I nominate:

Listening to: “Golden Lion” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Day 6 Blogger Challenge ~ Biannual Bibliothon

rapunzel-background_090955577_186Hello, fellow bloggers, Bibliothonners, and readers! I hope that your Friday is spectacular and that your reading progress is going well. Today’s challenge is to write 25 facts–no more, no less–about myself. This may seem easy, but I don’t think its ever really easy for most people (myself included) to talk about themselves. Especially today, since I had a job interview this morning and had to more or less sell myself to the lady sitting in front of me. Uck. Nevertheless, though, I shall complete the challenge and try to make it fun. I will not be doing all bookish facts, but I’ll do as many as I can think up. So here goes:

  1. I read 2-4 books at a time.
  2. My least favorite genre is Christian romance.
  3. I love Goodreads and am addicted to signing up for challenges.
  4. I am addicted to bookish merch, specifically candles and bookmarks!
  5. Another recent addiction of mine is bookish subscription boxes. Opening them is like Christmas!
  6. I collect books for my shelves. Hardcover, paperback…I don’t really care. But if books are from the same series, the editions MUST match!
  7. My preference for coffee or tea depends on my mood, but I do like both.
  8. The first big concert I ever went to was the Backstreet Boys.
  9. Speaking of the Backstreet Boys, I was a huge fan growing up and my walls were plastered with their posters. Literally, at least one (maybe 2) of my walls were not even visible.
  10. If you follow my blog or have read my bio, you know I am a singer. Well, I firmly believe that one of the reasons that I have an ear for harmonies is because of spending hours listening to, and singing along with the harmonies of boy bands.
  11. The first time I sang in public, I was in preschool and I sang “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” from Oklahoma. The second time I was supposed to sing in public, I chickened out.
  12. In second grade, I was the “best singer” in my class and they made me be the Big Bad Wolf in our class musical of The 3 Little Pigs. I hated it because I was a girl. I’m still embarrassed about it to this day.
  13. My first car was a magenta Dodge Shadow that I named “Pinky.”
  14. I didn’t name my second car, which I owned for +10 years. It was a blue Dodge Neon.
  15. I now own a Chevy Equinox and her name is Georgie.
  16. I call my grandmother ‘Mormor,’ which is Swedish for Mother’s Mother.
  17. I still sleep with a teddy bear that I’ve had since I was a kid and a Build-A-Bear my fiancé made me. He doesn’t much love having to share the bed with them too. Too bad!
  18. I like scary movies, and definitely like movies that mess with your mind whether they are scary or not (i.e. Saw, Inception, The Cure for Wellness)
  19. My first paying job was at a Bowling Alley. I was a birthday party hostess. It sucked to come home smelling like that.
  20. My favorite paying job was working at a summer camp. I was a camper there for over ten years, and I was on the payroll for almost as long.
  21. My ideal reading spot would be in a hammock in front of or near a lake OR on a porch swing. Obviously I like gentle movement and the sound of waves.
  22. I love warm rain, and reading in rain/thunderstorms.
  23. While my mom is a reader, she doesn’t read as much as I do. She follows my Bookstagram though and always asks how I get so many books.
  24. I always travel with at least one book and/or my iPad. My phone has my reading apps too.
  25. I only recently learned to appreciate audiobooks, but I’m so glad I did. I am still a little picky about what books and genres I read though.

So there you have it. 25 facts about little ol’ me. Several are bookish, several are not. If you would like to leave a few facts about yourself, I would love to get to know you more as my readers and followers as well!! Please tell me some things about you!

Listening to: “Larger Than Life” by Backstreet Boys <– yes, now I am craving BSB
